The Paradox of Consciousness Part 3

Kahlil Gibran states in “The Prophet” that beauty is eternity gazing at itself in the mirror, only you are eternity and you are the mirror. This is the continuing paradox of consciousness. Is the universe conscious of itself, or is it conscious of itself by seeing itself through our eyes? I’m taken back by the common hours, the days I spend in support of myself, family, and the things that surround me, realizing how temporal all of this is, and yet how important it remains to being. For without it, there would be only void – paradox indeed! Ray Kurzweil and others tell us that the world around us, is a singularity, a construct of our biological computer, where what we see – perceived light reconstructed from the tuning mechanism of our eye, into a construct of the world – realm – around us. The same can be said for sound, for smell, for touch, and for taste. Who is to say that what I see as green, you see as yellow, what I smell as mint, you smell as sage, and what I hear as water rushing you hear as wind. Shall we believe we are simply a biological computer and consciousness is nothing more than the sum total of a collection of elements and electrical discharges that begins at our first breath and ends with our last?
Then there is The Matrix, a construct of intelligence far beyond our own, something with a closer understanding of consciousness so it / they are able of manipulating our state of being, our thinking, into abdicating our free will, and handing over all our free energy to them. Carlos Castaneda and Don Juan talk of the The Flyers, reminiscent of Dragons, a Quetzalcoatl who controls the destiny of humanity.
What I can most assuredly state is we live in a consensus reality. Keep this in mind every time you listen to the news, stand up for your flag, or bow your head in prayer – Are you making a conscious decision, or are you assuming a consensus? Had I been raised in New Delhi instead of New York, my consensus reality would be far different than what it is today. So the question is – In consciousness do you question? Do you ever question? Do you question everything?
Consensus reality can be easy, and it can be very dangerous. Any behavioral scientist will tell you that mammals, including humans, are relatively easy to train, to program, in a sense, to carry out tasks with little or no interference from reason or will. We live in a free will universe for certain, and the reality is we are all acting on our own free will, except that will is easily co-opted, once we decide we are “this” or we are “that” (insert label).
Jung talks about our Shadow Self. If we are to believe that we are more than elements miraculously merged into a thinking machine, we have to delve into thought, and the idea that even as light casts a shadow, then it follows that thought, as energy, casts a shadow as well. Alan Watts tells us that we can’t see our self, we cannot take our eyes out of our head and look back at our self. Movies might be as close as we can get, but who can stand seeing their bare- naked self on a screen. (Except for selfish narcissism, in my experience, most people do not like to be filmed). Yet our shadow self, is where darkness follows behind us, the part of our being – ego if you like – that haunts us every waking hour, gives us headaches, the common cold, and a thousand other maladies, we define as illnesses, not accepting them as shadows.
Consciousness sets us free or haunts our lives, our being, without it all of these words are just ink stains, are just wind blown autumn leaves, yet metaphors make the argument ever more certain that consciousness may only be a paradox to those who question it. Otherwise, thought is simply a means to an hollow, nihilistic end, a shadow lengthening in the twilight, and dust returning to dust.

Far From Here

She’s looking away
into a far sky
across a canyon of hope
To a place
where she knew
he would remain
even as he stood
by her side

Her dreams
and their dreams
Melting in ice falls
of tears
falling like rain
Knowing the leaving
was coming too soon
and knowing how
love was forever
As rivers flowing
and sails
on its oceans
searching
for passages home
There is no distance
in the heart
she said
and agreed
time’s return was
too soon

Memories wait
forever unfolding
new lands beheld
in the sun
and there
hearts will keep
between sheets of rain
the presence returning
in reflections of light
in his eyes

The paradox of consciousness – part II

reflection_by_bora-dmh2m8

The paradox of consciousness continues to be an enigma in view of world events and the presence of the human condition today and throughout what we call recorded history. History as a descriptor is a vague understanding of that has gone on in the past relative to the conditions of present status quo – but bear in mind, that the very act of cataloguing human events is a matter of consciousness relative to the passage of time, and the interaction of human beings with their total environment, not just each other but the natural world – seen and unseen.

Carl Jung made us aware of the term archetypes for good reasons, for we live in a world of thought as much as we would want to believe that we only live in a world of matter. Your current act of reading these words is thought, and in that thought is the creative work of organizing my thinking, my words into your present consciousness, and allowing them to manifest as you will – (free will). Don’t mistake the map for the territory, when it comes to thinking, and also the reverse – the territory for the map! Thinking is reality as much as reality is thought – which is a paradox of consciousness.

Do we dream our life into existence? I would venture many will agree with this in some way or another, but in most cases it would be limited to concepts like – I wanted to vacation in Maui, so I imagined myself there – did the research, booked the flights, and the hotels, got myself to the airport, was transported to paradise, and the dream was made real. All well and good, but let’s not limit the creative power of the mind, based on a misconception of consciousness; That all encompassing, Spirit, soul, body, creation of the reality that surrounds us.

Stepping back – Science would have us believe that our bodies come into being by the very natural process of procreation, gestation, and birth. No argument there, but wasn’t thought involved? Idealistically – Two individual consciousnesses decided to create a family, created a union, and brought their dream into their presence. Or, at the very least two horny people fucked at the perfect time of the moon, and human egg was fertilized, to be born in a time, in rhythm with nature. Both were thought forms, granted one might be considered more noble that the other, but none the less, it was a thought that brought forth these creations.

We cannot measure Spirit because Spirit cannot be measured. As stated in the Tao Te Ching – The Tao that can be spoken of is not The Tao. Most people – even scientists believe in a higher power, and this is were the paradox begins, as belief is not knowledge – so we profess faith to be the knowledge of things not seen, and by founding our religions on it, we propagate the paradox. The modern human (and by modern I mean the current human consciousness of any age) wants to know the truth, yet too often accepts the lie in believe as the same thing, and could quite readily die in a war fighting for it. The very first human right – perhaps the most important human right, is the ability to ask questions and be allowed to find answers that are not a matter of consensus, but are a matter of truth to an individual’s mind.

Oppression is a violation of this very natural condition of consciousness, to question reality, to be curious about the world around us, to look at the clockwork of the universe and ask why, then being allowed to freely seek the truth in your own way, in your own time, without conflict or criticism other than constructive argumentation. Perhaps this is what the philosophers were after, and what has become obscured by university exams, and the dogmas of higher learning. The paradox of consciousness is not that we are less learned than ever before, it is that we question less and less what we learn as truth and in doing so accept more and more of what the senses tell us, rather than what the soul of things speaks so clearly through Spirit. As Gibran said so succinctly “We are eternity gazing at itself in the mirror.”

raison d’être

mountain tree

Summer days waking the earth
Wind and fire rain upon the land
Will it find hope
extinguished with the flames
or Spirit rising with the wind

Is this the reason for being
For rising tides
and rainbows on far horizons
for beauty and passion
for holding onto life

Meadows fill with windflowers
Born by the light
of a distant sun
Whose love knows no boundaries
Embracing the oceans of time

Where do the songbirds go
When night falls
Do they fall from the sky
Does the earth gather them up
to rise again with the dawn

Do the wing-ed’s songs
Echo and vanish with them
Leaving the Nightingale
Alone – keeping vigil
Through the dark?

Are we the same
Do the dream worlds we visit
while sleeping
Become what’s the matter
with life

Or is life what happens
when we dream
Of forests whispering in the wind
and the snow that waits
Above the Tropic of Cancer

Clouds

days are swirling
like canyon rivers
rushing from a storm
a thousand miles
of muddy water
silt settles in veins
of silver left for ages
in plain sight
undiscovered

why do clouds
block the sun
or blue swirls simmer
in shadows of a noon day
where love recalls
the weeping willow
and a riverbed
sleeping in the light
beside her

has the sky parted
or a veil of vapor
undone by the wind
left us alone
under its spell
holding our hearts
in the timeless dream
always tempted
to return to love

Another Dream

shadows on stone

Shadows longing etched in stone
Reflections of their being
Presence stills the heart and mind
Inside where she lies dreaming

Of testaments to every word
The heart has come to know
A fruit to nourish all they will
While living here below

the heaven left when life began
Its breathing came to be
As light was formed so far beyond
A sunrise on this sea

of love their everlasting day
Reflecting in the saffron sun
Beneath the skin imagining
The wonders left undone

So there another evening rolls
and settles in these hearts
Clouds drift by the jealous moon
Another dream departs

textures of love

Kirlian Rose

feeling the heart
laughter at dawn
touch under cover
next to the life
where lovers belong

breath on the skin
breathe in the life
souls seek to unravel
their dreams
in the night

wholeness imagined
into the being
longing fulfilled
ecstasy quaking
essence is seething

springs ever flowing
cleansing the earth
waters of life
the dream everlasting
becoming through birth.

Sea of Love

Sea_of_Love_painting

Where is the Light
Can I hide my eyes
From the morning Sun
Or a Full Moon rise
Without knowing
Its truth Rises
Within my Heart
and Soul Eternal

As the dew settles
On the early lawn
and the Wren sings
to the Light of Day
Hope is forever
bound up inside
the Breath of Life

Faith hidden within
its ceaseless motion
Waiting to be born
Aside this river
Where cool waters flow
As blessings into
a Sea of Love

Breathe

Lovers_Walking_by_VFrance
Take a breath
Hold this moment
In your heart
In your hand
and remember
How it felt
to be together
Knowing the ache
Free, feeling
dreaming and waking
Realizing life
as a breath
and a heartbeat
Love given
and taken
Memories forever
and still
Echoes of hands
long held
and walks
long remembered
Sunsets passing
into time
Glorious, glorious
time …
