I Have Dreamed by Mary Oliver

apple tree
I have dreamed
of accomplishment.
I have fed
I have traded
nights of sleep
for a length of work.
Lo, and I have discovered
how soft bloom
turns to green fruit
which turns to sweet fruit.
Lo, and I have discovered
all winds blow cold
at last,
and the leaves,
so pretty, so many,
in the great, black
packet of time,
in the great, black
packet of ambition,
and the ripeness
of the apple
is its downfall.

  1. She is becoming my favorite these days…
Thank you Peter..for sharing another one…..
Hope your Christmas…Yule was everything and more….
    Take care…You Matter…

  2. While your own writings say much about you, the verses you chose to share from other authors do no less. This is an excellent selection for the season. The dark half of the year (from Autumnal to Vernal Equinox) seems to be a natural time for introspection, evaluation, and revelation for many. This piece seems to reflect this season well. Your discriminating taste suggests your own fine inspirations. Happy holidays to you, sir.

    • Since life has left me so little time at the keyboard lately, having relocated our home, and getting our life in order, when I find something I can share, such a Mary Oliver’s beautiful words, then I am glad they strike a resonance with others.
May you find peace a prosperity in the New Year, and life be gentle with your days …
